Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has encouraged students in Senior High Schools(SHSs) to never look down on their classmates from poor homes but rather embrace and share with them.
“For those of you who are coming from good homes, whose parents can afford, you should endeavour to remember your mates in your dormitories and classrooms who don’t have. Be selfless, embrace them and make them your friends. Don’t let them feel so bad that they come from poor homes because you never know tomorrow. They may be become your life saviour”, he admonished.
“And for those of you who don’t have, don’t envy those who have at all, I know that hard work pays. Work hard and pray to your God; all shall be well. Don’t let the situation of today move you into thinking that there is no hope. I tell you, you will make it, it doesn’t matter your background, it doesn’t matter where you are coming from, you will surely make it”. He stressed.
Afenyo-Markin who doubles as Member of Parliament(MP) for Effutu Constituency made these remarks when he visited the Winneba Senior High School to commission a six-unit classroom block and also donated 300 classroom furniture to ease some major challenges facing the School.
Sharing his life story, said he used to sell bread and tom-brown at Winneba Senior High School campus with his mother.
“We will come and sell up to midnight and walk home at midnight. It took the grace of God for me to have the benefit of Secondary education. Life sometimes is not too fair but if you have faith in God you will smile at the end”, he added.
“Today, if I’m a Member of Parliament, I pledge that I will serve all without being partisan because the seat in Parliament is Effutu and not an NPP seat so whether you are an NPP or NDC you are mine and am going to serve you with a good heart”, Afenyo-Markin assured.
The lawmaker later presented 400 mono desks to Winneba Technical Institute to help address the furniture challenge facing the school
