The Ashanti Regional leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has refuted claims of the suspension of the region’s Women’s Organiser, Akua Afriyie.
Earlier reports had suggested that she was dismissed from her position for openly expressing her support for a candidate from the opposing party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in their flagbearer race.
The reported reason for Afriyie’s supposed suspension was a video in which she expressed her admiration for an NPP flagbearer candidate, Alan Kyerematen.
In response, the Ashanti Regional NDC leadership released a statement on August 9, 2023, denying any knowledge of a woman named Akua Afriyie holding the position of Women’s Organiser or any other party executive role at any level within their records. They labeled the reports as malicious and clarified that no such declarations had been made by any of their women’s organisers, nor had any suspension taken place.
The statement emphasized that the name linked to the story did not correspond with any of their official records for party positions.
