Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, the Presidential Advisor on Health, has emphasized the need for legislation on organ donations in Ghana, citing the country’s healthcare advancements as a key reason. As GhanaWeb continues its campaign on this issue, Dr. Nsiah-Asare discussed the progress made in healthcare during an interview with Daniel Oduro on The Lowdown on GhanaWeb TV.
He highlighted how the healthcare sector has made significant strides, including training specialized ophthalmologists capable of performing cornea transplants. However, he emphasized that a legislative framework is essential for effective organ transplantation, safeguarding against illegal practices.
Dr. Nsiah-Asare explained the necessary stages and precautions for successful organ transplantation, pointing out that Ghana has made progress in areas such as cornea, kidney, and heart transplants. He also noted that individuals are being trained to conduct liver transplants in the country.
He stressed the importance of legislation to regulate the entire process, ensuring that donations are ethically conducted and preventing abuses like organ trafficking. Dr. Nsiah-Asare highlighted the significance of enacting laws to govern the transplantation of organs, tissues, and cells, in order to protect the well-being of both donors and recipients.
