Today, Tuesday, September 21, 2021 is Founder’s Day or Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day. The day has been debated for so long as there has been a conflict as who really founded Ghana. The Danquah claim the Big 6 as the founders of Ghana while the Nkrumaists claim that many started the struggle but Nkrumah was the man who founded Ghana. This has caused 2 holidays on the Ghanaian calendar; August 4 for Founders Day and September 21 for Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.
On Good Morning Ghana today, Tuesday, September 21, 2021, Edudzi Tamakloe, a member of the NDC legal team and Richard Ahiagbah, the former Executive Director of the Danquah Institute joined Randy Abbey on the show. Today’s discussion delved into the whole brouhaha about who founded Ghana. however, before Richard could have his take, Randy cautioned him to be careful of what he was about to say especially because he is coming from a Danquah institute.
In response, Richard answered that it was erroneous to say that Kwame Nkrumah founded Ghana. He was of the view that it was a collective effort that led to the creation of Ghana. When pushed to the wall that others also started the fight before the Big 6 came in, he pronounced that then it was better to say Ghanaians founded Ghana than say Nkrumah founded Ghana.
“The work and life of Kwame Nkrumah was great, but so were others. What will the children of the Ako Adjeis and Paa Grants say? It is egregious to say that Kwame Nkrumah founded Ghana. However, we can say that the 6 founded Ghana. The Big 6 are the key figures. It is symbolic to say the Big 6 founded Ghana but to say Nkrumah alone is an arrogation. So let’s say that Ghanaians founded Ghana” Richard said.
The argument will continue as to whether Ghana should be acknowledged to have been founded by a group or just one person. Be that as it may, it can be said that behind every revolution, there is a personality or a brain behind the move. If President Akufo-Addo in eulogizing late president Jerry Rawlings could say that, Rawlings is the father of the Fourth Republic despite the support from other people, who then founded Ghana?
