A dramatic scene unfolded at the celebration of Worker’s Day in the Ashanti Regional capital of Kumasi as staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana walked out on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah when he mounted the stage to deliver a speech.
Draped in red and brandishing placards, the ECG employees expressed their grievances with messages like “KSTU is not a security zone” and “Allow us to collect what has been consumed,” protesting against unwarranted arrests during the execution of their duties.
Yussif Osman, Chairman of the ECG Senior Staff Union in Ashanti East, conveyed the workers’ discontent with the minister’s meddling in their operations and the arrest of their manager.
“We have unresolved issues with him; he has taken actions that have displeased the workers’ front; we initially decided not to attend at all,” Osman stated in a conversation with Citi News.
“However, as this is our event, we attended. But since the minister has neglected our requests, we chose not to hear him out. This peaceful protest signifies our refusal to engage or heed his words. We’ll re-enter once his address concludes,” he elaborated.
This walkout was a response to the arrest of ECG’s Ashanti East Manager, Ing. Wiafe Asomani, after a disconnection operation at Kumasi Technical University due to outstanding debts.
