President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been elected Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States( ECOWAS).
President Tinubu got elected Sunday, July 9, 2023, in Bissau, Capital of Guinea Bissau during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS. President Tinubu, who took over from Guinea-Bissau’s President, Umaro Embaló, immediately expressed his readiness to expand the borders of democracy and entrench the ECOWAS region.
“We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is very tough but it is the form of government,” he declared.
The role of the Chairman of ECOWAS is largely diplomatic, allowing him to intervene diplomatically during conflicts and provide some input on how the ECOWAS should be run to achieve its objectives.
