Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has praised Minority Members of Parliament (MPs), especially the former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, for working hard to ensure that he became Speaker of Parliament and subsequently elected as President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
Right Honourable Alban Bagbin noted that without the sacrifice and fighting spirit of the MPs, he could not have become Speaker and therefore every honour he gets is as a result of their toil to get him elected Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament.
He made this known in an interaction with journalists in Tamale after being conferred with an award for his work as Speaker of Parliament.
“Almighty God has used these MPs here to fight and make sure that I became Speaker of Ghana. And with that, we have been given all this honour as a people.
Throughout this journey, your representatives, your Members of Parliament have been solidly behind me and particularly, the former leader, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu has gone round with me to all these places and made sure that I was elected as the Speaker of the Commonwealth,” he stated.
He announced that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association will have its conference in Accra in September this year.
“As a result of that, this year all these Parliaments are coming to Ghana for us to have a conference in Accra at the end of September,” he added.
Alban Bagbin is the first known member of the minority party in Parliament to be elected Speaker of Parliament. His election was made possible given the near-hung nature of the 8th Parliament and the relentlessness of the minority Members of Parliament.
