Members of the Ghana Police Service who have been deployed to the University of Ghana campus to ensure peace following clashes between students of the Commonwealth Hall and Sarbah Hall are reportedly chasing female students with love proposals.
A vehicle was set ablaze and the bust of John Mensah Sarbah at the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, was vandalized and taken away when students affiliated with Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah halls clashed for unknown reasons.
Police were deployed to the campus to ensure peace with some of them placed inside the male-dominated Commonwealth Hall and the entire campus.
The police officers were deployed to work along with the University security services to investigate the clashes and work towards finding lasting solutions to the tensions between students of the two halls.
However, male students of the University say the police have been proposing to female students and trying to take their numbers to start amorous relationships.
The female students who usually wear skimpy dresses skirts and shorts on campus reportedly attracted the attention of the police who are proposing to them.
Some of the police personnel, students say, even bring fast food and other goodies and gifts to woo the female students.
The male students are unhappy with the University for allowing the police to deploy on campus.
It is unclear what sparked the inter-hall scuffle, which resulted in setting ablaze of a vehicle, injuries to students and damage to properties running into several of cedis. The police remain but are few compared to earlier.
The properties destroyed included the Student Representative Council (SRC) signposts, university notice boards, waste containers and louvre blades of some buildings.
Despite the police presence, the students of the Commonwealth Hall reignited their protest after the University’s management announced a decision to suspend the Hall Master and Senior Tutor of the Commonwealth Hall for allowing students to get involved in a violent clash on August 5th.
