Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kumah Aboagye has disclosed that cases of the new omicron variant of COVID-19 have been detected within communities.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Accra Thursday, Dr Kumah Aboagye noted that seven cases had been found after sequencing and tracing from the first cases recorded.

“We have also identified Omicron cases in the community. When we did the last sequencing, we saw about seven cases among the community samples,” Dr Kumah Aboagye said.

He underscored the need for persons who were being hesitant to take the COVID jabs in addition to adherence of COVID protocols to avert deaths and rampant spread of the disease.OmicronDownload

Citing the Volta Region, where there had been reports of high vaccination hesitancy, Dr Aboagye appealed to traditional leaders, opinion leaders and Members of Parliament to continue to help government’s resolve to educate.

The first set of cases of the new Omicron variant was detected in the country on November 21 among two foreigners from Nigeria and South Africa.

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research further announced the detection of 34 more imported cases among some 120 samples collected from travelers returning to Ghana from 3 countries between November 21 and 25.
