For some, the corona pandemic has been devasting. But some have struck gold during the depressing time by making others laugh their worries away. Asantewaa started making comical videos on TikTok during the lockdown. Present-day, she is one of the highest-paid TikTokers in Ghana.
In an interview with Deloris Frimpong, Asantewa chronicled her journey from boredom to stardom whilst the country was on lockdown. She attributed the start of her TikTok success to her bosom friend, who introduced her to the app.
“My friend (my coursemate). She called me during the lockdown that there’s an app called TikTok, and have I heard about it? And she thinks this app is for me. So download the app. And I am like, ma te (I hear)… so I downloaded the app and did my first video then everybody loved it. I woke up, and people were just tagging me that some bloggers have posted the video.”
Today Asantewaa has almost 900,000 followers with 20million likes on her videos. She disclosed how she makes money from the social media platform.
