The journalist and broadcaster, Nhyiraba Papa Kwasi Simpson was picked up by the police to assist in investigations after one young man, Stephen Kumi reported on his live radio program that his girlfriend Stephanie Kumiwaa has been kidnapped.
The police after interrogation granted the journalist police enquiry bail and were made to appear before the court. On Thursday, November 4, 2021, the journalist appeared before the Takoradi Circuit Court A for the case to be heard. He was full of hope at his initial composure when he was seen at the premises of the court.
He was wearing red attire with smiles in the company of other journalists in full readiness for the case. He was charged with publication of false news with the intent of causing fear and alarm and false publication of news through an electronic device.
The prosecutor, Emmanuel Basintale told the court that the broadcast journalist did not crosscheck the information from Stephen Kumi before broadcasting it on his electronic space. He adds that what the journalist did falls contrary to the electronic communications act 775 of 2008 and as such, he should be punished according to the laws.
Led by his lawyer, Ebow Quansah, the journalist pleaded not guilty to the charges. The presiding judge, his honor, Michael Ampadu remanded the broadcast journalist to two weeks on remand. He was in court with the prime suspect, Stephen Kumi who also received the same punishment. His lawyer told the court that the journalist is very popular and has properties in the region and as such should be granted bail but the prosecutor indicated that he will interfere in investigations if that is granted. the situation has generated uproar in some parts of Takoradi since his fans appears lost.
