There was a drama on Metro TV good morning Ghana show today, Thursday, 25th November, 2021 when morning show host, Randy Abby raised the discussion of E-Levy tax introduced by NPP government.
Former deputy Health minister, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye was responding to how Ghanaians are misleading themselves on the momo tax introduced by his Government and stated that they have put measures in place to give Ghanaians a good living.
Randy Abbey brilliantly questioned him that why is it important for government to tax electronic transactions and he responded that government is taxing Ghanaians because they want the betterment of the country. Hon Okoe Boye made a slip of thank by saying that a certain young man came and work for him and get paid without being taxed because he did not use electronic system. That’s mobile interoperability platforms.
Randy Abbey asked him that for example if another person hired the same guy and used momo platform to pay the guy, both of them who will be deducted? Okoe Boye said the person who made the payment with momo platform.
Randy Abbey brilliantly questioned him again by saying that if he says so why couldn’t he use the momo platform to make the payment as he says it’s a better way of making payments? He responded that he is just contributing to the national development by making the payment with physical cash which made Randy Abbey and Sammy Gyamfi to burst into laugher.
Randy Abbey: you yourself why couldn’t you use the momo platform to make the payment and pay for the 1.75 Levy?
Okoe Boye: I pay with physical cash to contribute to the national development.
Randy Abbey: Have you seen that paying the 1.75 Levy will not be easy if it is accepted?
Sammy Gyamfi: Hon Okoe Boye, the thing is very bad. Tell your government to reverse it because you as a leader too is avoiding to pay the momo tax. Lets be honest to ourselves.
After this all of them burst into laugher as Okoe Boye couldn’t defend the example he is trying to put across.
