The Gyaasehene of Amanase, a community in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region, Nana Addo Agyekum, has alleged that persons who litter the environment are witches and wizards.

According to him, littering leads to an outbreak of diseases and deaths which cause affliction, synonymous with witchcraft activities.

“People who litter are Witches. Littering is even more dangerous than Witchcraft. Anyone who litters the environment is more dangerous than a witch. Filth kills more than witchcraft. Poor sanitation is more dangerous than invoking of Curse. Hundreds of people can die through various diseases caused by filth. Filth can cause an outbreak of disease that can kill a whole family”

The Chief, therefore, called on Traditional leaders to support municipal and District Assemblies to institute harsher punishment regime for persons found culpable.

“This is the reason why I am suggesting that our by-laws must be punitive enough if someone is found culpable and fined at least Gh500, I think that will be deterrent enough “

The Chief said this when speaking at a clean-up and Health Screen held simultaneously by the Amanase District of The Church of Pentecost in collaboration with the Ayensuano District office of the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO.

The Amanase District Minister of the Church of Pentecost, Pastor Pastor Isaac Baidoo, said the exercise is part of the Church’s commitment to helping Ghana achieve the sustainable Development Goals six specifically on Sanitation. He urged Christians to live exemplary lives by practicing good sanitation and hygiene in their communities.

The Ayensuano District Director of NADMO, Joseph Okai Gyan, said “poor sanitation is a causative agent of health disaster, therefore, it is imperative for us as disaster prevention and management organization we partner the Church of Pentecost to embark on this clean-Up exercise to keep our surrounding clean. Since I took over as NADMO Director, I noticed that people dump refuse at river banks which we have been educating residents to stop that practice”
