The government of Nana Akufo-Addo is rehabilitating the Baba Yara Stadium ahead of the 63rd independence parade to ensure a successful trouble-free event in Kumasi, in the Ashanti region.
This is part of a policy by the current administration to rotate the annual Independence Day Parade across the various regions. This year has been shifted to the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi after it was successfully held in Tamale, in the Northern region last year.
Speaking to journalists at the Media launch in Kumasi, Chairman of the anniversary planning committee, Lord Commey said the venue for the event (Baba Yara sports Stadium) is under repair works to keep it in perfect shape before the day.
According to Lord Commey, aside the original program line up, People of the region have been urged upon to come up with creative, innovative and ingenious programs to enrich the celebration and further reinforce the powerful Ashanti Kingdom on the map.
“Ashanti is a powerful nation of its own, quote or unquote. It’s on the international map already because of the King but hosting the independence parade for the first time in Ashanti is a big plus to the chiefs and people and they should own it,” Lord Commey noted.
Independence Day marks the declaration of freedom form the United Kingdom (UK) by Prime Minister Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on March 6th, 1957. That made Ghana the first Sub Saharan country to gain independence from the British.
“Let it be said that from the first time in the history of the Ashanti Kingdom they brought the celebration to Kumasi. We are taken Ghana to Kumasi and any Ashanti should chest out and be proud,” Lord Commey said.
This year’s event is themed: “consolidating our gains.”
