The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) is to report to the police a journalist who authored a publication alleging that the Council has received an amount of GH¢145 million from the government to carry out election-related activities towards the December polls.

The Council says it wants the journalist to provide “further and better particulars” of the allegation to the police because it has not received any money from the state.

The Council on Tuesday denied receiving any such money from the government or any other state institution to carry out election-related activities.

“No such amount had been credited to the CCG, let alone disappearing from its accounts,” the General Secretary of the Council, Reverend Dr Cyril Fayose, explained in an interview on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Wednesday.

“We are looking for [the journalist]. The writer did not contact us and we are referring the matter to the police to investigate.”

Rev Fayose added: “We are reporting to the police today. It came yesterday so we shall report today because you just can’t write such things on such a reputable institution.”

“We want him to give further and better particulars of the issue to the police. We haven’t gotten to him yet.”

Funding

When asked on how the Council funds its election activities, Rev Fayose explained that it is true the CCG undertakes election-related programmes every election year to promote peace in the country but not with funding from the government.

“We are expecting some funding from the Star Ghana Foundation and the Bread for the World, a German organisation, to support its election-related activities, but it was nothing close to the GH¢145 million.”
