Eating a healthy three-square meal is increasingly becoming a difficult task within the walls of Ghana’s Senior Correctional Centre, Public Relations Officer Sgt. Francis Agbomadzi has said.

Speaking to GhanaWeb after an NGO feted the inmates of the facility, Sgt Agbomadzi lamented that government’s subvention for nutrition towards the facility amounts GHC1.80 for each of the juveniles.
He decried that the centre is compelled to work with that budget albeit small to enable them to provide rations.

The Public Relations officer commended Frake and Forshelzan foundations for combining their efforts to put smiles on the faces of the members of the facility.

He added that the institution was usually largely complemented by donations from individuals and organisations who carry out such exercised.

“…As we speak, the governmental subvention in terms of feeding is GHC1.80 per day per head, for one inmate. What it means is that 60pesewas for breakfast, 60pesewas for lunch and 60pesewas for supper. It is not the best of situation that we will like to have for juvenile offenders such as those we have here… Philanthropists, government institutions, churches and other religious organisations also donate materials, food items to augment government’s subvention, so it’s still not the best situation” he explained.

On his part, founder of Frake Foundation intimated that the two foundations (Frake and Forshelzan) prepared lunch for the inmates numbering about 300 to lighten the load on the Prisons Service.

The items the group donated to the Senior Correctional Centre included boxes of bottled water, bags of sachet water, cartons of drinks and hampers.

He urged the public and other philanthropic bodies to join the wagon to aid the juveniles.
Frake Foundation is a non-government organisation that embark in humanitarian works to help orphanages as well as offer medical assistance.
