Eight Ghanaian women who secured big corporate moves in 2019

In the corporate world, the dream of every employee is to progress and take up bigger responsibilities to showcase their expertise.

Sometimes the progress comes within one’s organization and in some cases, other organisations present exciting offers that are too good to be turned down.

In this report, Citi Business News focuses on some Ghanaian women who moved to other bigger corporate roles to showcase their skills.

Dr. Mrs. Juliana Oye Ameh, Trust Hospital

The Trust Hospital in October, appointed Dr. Mrs. Juliana Oye Ameh as its first Chief Executive Officer, since the hospital was hived off from the mother company Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in January 2013.

Dr. Ameh is a Senior Specialist Paediatrician, who had her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in Nigeria in 2000. She later pursued post-graduate training in Paediatrics at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

She has over fifteen years of progressive experience in pediatrics, neonatal and child health. She comes into her new role with over seven years of specialized experience in health services development and management.

Nana Araba Abban, Ecobank Group

Nana Araba Abban in August got the nod as the Group Consumer Banking Head of the Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), the Lomé-based parent company of the Ecobank Group.

With her appointment, Nana became a member of the Group Executive Committee and reports directly to the Group Chief Executive Officer.

During her career at Ecobank, Nana Araba Abban held several senior positions including Group Head of Direct Banking, Head of Client Engagement and Senior Group Manager for Personal Banking.

Nana Araba Abban is a Chartered Accountant (FCCA) with over 25 years’ experience in the Financial Services industry.

Patricia Obo-Nai, Vodafone Ghana

For Ghanaians, the appointment of Patricia Obo-Nai as Chief Executive of Vodafone Ghana to replace Yolanda Cuba was a proud moment. Vodafone Ghana has not had a Ghanaian CEO and Patricia’s appointment not only made her the first Ghanaian to lead the company but the first Ghanaian woman to hold that position.

An Engineer by profession, she comes into her new role with 22 years of experience in Information Technology (IT) and Telecommunications. In addition, she has extensive commercial experience in the telecommunications industry.

She was appointed in February 2019, while her appointment took effect in April 2019.

Jacqueline Mpare, Ecobank Group

Another Ghanaian also got a big break at Ecobank. Jacqueline Mpare was appointed the Head, Agency Banking for the Group.

Her appointment took effect in December and she reports to the Group Head, Agency Banking and Remittances Distribution.

Jacqueline is expected to lead the development of Agency Networking across the Ecobank Group network.

She will work cross-functionally with other businesses in Consumer Banking and other key stakeholders across the Group to manage the rollout and support of the agent network.

Dr. Sheena Lovia Boateng, UGBS

In their efforts to enhance student-faculty ratio and augment quality teaching, the University of Ghana Business School welcomed a new lecturer, Dr. Sheena Lovia Boateng, to the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship who has been at post since August 15, 2019.

She holds Doctoral and Undergraduate degrees in Marketing from the University of Ghana and has a keen interest in marketing and also in working in academia.

She is the first female to complete a Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Ghana, and is also the founder of the Women in Tertiary Education (WITE) Network, which seeks to provide support for women in tertiary education concerning academic research, family-life and career balance.

Rosy Fynn, Busy Internet Ghana

Rosy Fynn, who has had a number of stints in several top positions in the telecommunications sector was appointed Chief Executive of Busy 4G mobile broadband service provider.

Ms. Fynn holds a first degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Smith College, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School, both in Massachusetts, USA.

Rosy comes into this new role with a wealth of strategic and operational business leadership experience honed internationally and locally.

Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, Guinness Ghana

Guinness Ghana in May announced the appointment of Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah as its new Corporate Relations Director.

She replaced Gabriel Opoku-Asare who was appointed as Head of Society by Guinness Ghana’s parent company Diageo.

Ms. Owusu-Ankomah joined the Guinness family with 14 years of experience working with multinational organizations in Corporate Affairs, Crisis and Reputation Management, Policy Advocacy and Compliance.

She most recently spearheaded the successful regulatory approvals for Ghana’s first telecommunications merger between Bharti Airtel and Millicom, the parent company of Tigo.

Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo, Hollard

Experienced marketing and communications professional, Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo, in September joined Hollard Ghana.

According to a statement issued, Cynthia will be responsible for formulating and driving strategic marketing initiatives aimed at enhancing the Hollard brand and sustainably growing its various subsidiaries – Hollard Insurance Ghana Limited and Hollard Life Assurance Ghana Limited.

“Cynthia is an excellent addition to the team. We are excited to have someone of her caliber who embodies the values and personality of the Hollard brand. She is known for her open-minded approach to creating strategic, consumer-oriented communications. We believe Cynthia will bring her energy and experience to bear in achieving our goal to become the number one insurance group,” said Group CEO, Patience Akyianu.
